| FREN 441 - The Francophone Experience |

This topics-oriented course explores francophone culture of French-speaking societies in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. Topics for the course will include one of the following: Francophone Literature and Culture of Africa and the Caribbean; The Francophone Experience: From Vietnam to Quebec; Francophone Culture: Lebanon and the Maghreb. These topics will cover issues such as decolonization, the search for cultural, religious, and linguistic identity; the clash between modernity and tradition; and the situation of women. Readings will be selected from the works of Carrier, Césaire, Chédid, Fanon, Djébar, Condé, Schwartz-Bart, Hébert, Oyono, and Zobel. Prerequisites: two 300-level courses in French with a grade of C+ or better, placement, or equivalent. Alternate years, 2011-12.
